Laurel II House McClean Design

mcclean design

The primary public day-to-day living spaces and bedrooms face away from the road, with only the formal spaces opposite the front water garden. This two-level Beverly Hills house is located on a 24,451-square-foot site in the Trousdale Estates area with a relatively small buildable area. Restrictive codes combined with the client’s aspirations for more program and facilities focused the use of a basement for the program and thus to look at different ways of transmitting light to the lower level. An entry courtyard is screened from the street and the garage is located on the lower level and reached by a ramp. The garage’s large window faces a sunken courtyard that contains a large rectangular water feature.

CALIFORNIA HOMES THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE

mcclean design

Every day since I have been challenged to push the envelope of design and construction and I am loving every minute. My love for drawingat an early age was a good indication that design and architecture would be inmy future. With over 22 years of architecturalexperience, I find myself at McClean Design working on one-of-a-kind luxurycustom homes. The uniqueness of each project brings out a high level ofcreativity as each property has its own challenges.

MODERN LUXURY

The feeling below provides a significant contrast to the main floor, with a series of bedrooms and entertainment spaces, wrapping around the landscaped courtyard. I grew up in the South Bay/Long Beach region of Southern California and attended Long Beach City College before transferring to university where my curiosity for the profession grew. My interest in architecture stems from wanting to know how a project evolves from concept to reality through the design process. While here at McClean Design,I am seeing the importance ofdesign and itseffecton an individual through materiality, light, and connection to the natural environment.

Construction Estimator jobs

The landscape is fully integrated into the project with specimen trees and bushes connecting the various outdoor spaces. The approach from the street up a steep driveway leads to a generous drive court where a relaxed limestone stair continues the climb to the entry of the home. The main living and dining space opens completely on both sides, allowing for cross ventilation, and the sense of being outdoors, while still sheltered from the elements.

A young entrepreneur commissioned McClean Design to build a house on a triple lot as a family retreat and a place to entertain their many friends. He and his interior designer, Lynda Murray, were eager to make a bold statement, and that gave the architects an opportunity to spread their wings. The square plot allowed them to devote the street frontage to a garden and a large garage. Translucent glass sheilds the garden from the street while revealing silhouettes of moving figures on the other side. Boldly figured white marble clads much of the exterior and is used extensively throughout the three-story house.

Growing up in the vibrant Vietnamese community of Little Saigon, I was immersed in a rich cultural tapestry that shaped my perspective on design. Prior to joining the team at McClean Design, I worked in various offices across Orange County and Los Angeles, assisting on the design of residential and mixed-use projects. As a graduate from Cal Poly Pomona, I earned my Bachelor of Architecture, laying the groundwork for my design skill. My passion for design is deeply rooted in the transformative power of architecture, particularly its placemaking ability to create meaningful places that resonate with people on a personal level. By continuously pushing the boundaries of design, I strive to craft spaces that not only inspire but also evoke a sense of wonder and belonging.

For as long as I can remember I have been infatuated with the art of creation and building at all scales. My grandma loved to tell the story of how I would beg and beg for this toy or that and when it was not handed to me, I would just make my own. I was lucky to have been raised in a family of artists, designers and builders who cultivated my passion and gave me the tools necessary for a career in architecture. I apprenticed as a carpenter, ironworker, and glazier and during this time gained a great appreciation of how design materializes and truly fell in love with architecture. I went on to work for many of the best residential architects in Southern California, helping to design and manage hundreds of single and multi-family residential projects across the U.S. and abroad. In 2019, I was given the opportunity to join McClean Design and jumped at the chance.

LEVELS

This dual commitment deepened my appreciation for the interplay of design and construction, guiding me towards the path of architecture. This journey ultimately culminated in my graduation with honors from Newschool of Architecture and Design in San Diego. Today, I feel fortunate to be part of the visionary team at McClean Design, collaboratively driving the advancement of contemporary modern architecture. Beyond architecture, I enthusiastically pursue various passions – from the exhilaration of racing and the serenity of boating, to the challenge (and sometimes frustration) of golf. However, the moments I treasure most are those spent with my growing family and loved ones.

Interiors - Art in Design

Through thoughtful design, I aspire to create spaces that inspire and resonate with people on a profound level, making a positive impact in their lives. Since we established McClean Design in 2000, I have been responsible for managing the office and keeping everybody on their toes! My passion though, is interior design and I enjoy working with private clients in addition to collaborating on projects within our office.

I look forward to the success and challenges ahead as I continue my professional journey in architecture and design. Doing all the things that Southern California has to offer, from camping/hiking in the mountains, relaxing at the beach, or playing sports at a local park. My architectural journey began during a transformative high school summer job at a Newport Beach cabinet shop. While working on custom houses, I discovered a profound passion for crafting unique homes. After high school, I dedicated myself to honing my artistic inclinations and further developing my woodworking skills.

Completed in April 2013, this house, currently owned by an art collector, is located on San Vicente Boulevard in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. The lot measures 31,466 square feet and does not offer a view, meaning that the residence is more focused on its garden. Because of traffic on the street, visual and noise buffers in the form of a landscape barrier, high gates, and a curved glass wall became a design priority. The wall leads to a waterfall used for further noise abatement and an infinity edge decorative pool. A unique feature is the master bedroom terrace glass floor, which is located over the outdoor living space, bringing extra natural light into the central kitchen area. The rear garden of the house, where the pool is located, has a pool house with a roof whose curvature echoes that of the roof of the main house.

Paul McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a licensed architect in several States including California. I feel that we have been very fortunate these last few years and have managed to complete many new homes. I have always enjoyed working with different people and am constantly amazed by the different and varied backgrounds of our clients.

Generous operable glazing gives the house a feeling of lightness and openness that is surely appropriate to the Los Angeles climate. Seen from the garden side, the house appears to be made up of a narrow black roof plane sitting above the pool, with walls largely made of glass. This is in direct contrast to the street side of the home, which is predominantly clad in limestone brick, giving only fleeting glimpses to the interior through a bronze lattice screen. Furnishing and finishes are soft and modern, with an emphasis on the white to beige color range.

A transparent entry bridge crosses over this water courtyard, leading to the living area in the direction of the rear outdoor infinity pool with views of Century City. The kitchen and family room open to the rear garden, while the dining room is contained in a glass area that bridges over the water courtyard. The triangular upper level pool has a shallow shelf that wraps around the master bedroom, creating a feeling that this part of the house is floating on water. A spa (gym and sauna) and fireplace are on the lower level, as are a bar and family lounge.

Open in concept and focused around the pool and garden area, the upper level blends seamlessly with its surroundings. On a complex multilevel lot overlooking the city of Beverly Hills, this project was designed to take advantage of the beautiful views of the city below, as well as the entire Los Angeles basin. The house is inspired by the rich history of modernism in California, in both its plan and material choices.

How to Create a Design Brief in 7 Steps 2024

design project

This guide delves into the seven pivotal steps of project design, providing insights on crafting a design with precision using tools like Jira Work Management and Confluence. Planning Pod’s Kear recommends finding online project management resources for your industry or specialty to guide you during the project design phase. You may also find it useful to use project planning and design tools like Microsoft Project.

You need additional design resources that synergize with your (already) amazing design team

design project

Of course, there will always be hiccups along the way, but a robust design project management plan will be flexible enough to swallow these up. Your project design structure is essential to how well your team receives tasks and finishes deliverables. Without any structure, you run the risk of double work, burnout, and angry clients. Design project managers are responsible for a project’s due dates, deliverables, budget, and team members. They must understand how to manage these resources and implement corrective actions with contingencies when things don’t go according to plan.

Understanding dependencies in project management

And no one wants to be the deer in headlights when a client asks for that design file you promised because it was lost under a soaring stack of other duties. With your design brief ready, the team can begin brainstorming concepts, drawing mock-ups, and collaborating on ways to fulfill the request. This is best done in a team brainstorming session using proven techniques to inspire creativity within the structure laid out in the brief. Creative briefs dig into the details of the request, outlining the initial project requirements, objectives, and potential obstacles. It should center around the who, what, where, why, why, and how of your project with a focus on the request and its overall goal. Once you’ve outlined a plan for each risk, you’re ready to begin executing your project.

Do I need to install any software to work on these Design Projects?‎

The designer transferred the colors of his collections to the interior design, applying them to Made in Italy products for the bedroom, the living room, table and kitchen. The passion for Italian food and cuisine is interpreted in designs inspired by food and dress the table with a touch of irony. Florentine leather-goods brand Il Bisonte is having its second gig in home decor, teaming once again with New York-based interior designer Shawn Henderson.

Once the overview is finalized, everyone will have a quick summary on hand that they can refer back to as needed. Like a team retrospective, ask your designers what went well and what caused problems so you can improve their experience at work. Get to know their skillset, workstyles, preferred communication channels, and strengths. No matter the type of project goals or expectations, in the very first meeting you have to avoid misunderstandings and awkward client conversations.

When you and your client make a budget for a project, it’s important to be realistic about the time it will take to research, plan, create, and make edits as needed. Be sure to leave enough room in their schedule and budget for potential difficulties or unexpected changes. After an overview of the project and company is complete, it’s important to explain the goals and objectives for a project. This section should focus on the design problem to solve and the steps your team will take to fix the issue. Once you’ve written out a brand overview, it’s time to give a detailed description of the design project being executed. This description is a summary of what you’ll be working on, why this work benefits the client, and everyone’s roles and responsibilities.

Resource management tools make it easy to determine your team’s talents and accurately assign the right resources to the right projects without going over budget. Avoid burnout and keep your clients in the picture by inviting them onto your projects for free. Time management or employee time tracking software tells you exactly how much time a certain task has taken and whether your team is on track for set deadlines. This also helps you keep track of your budget by logging the billable hours a designer has spent on a task. The waterfall methodology is a very traditional approach to project management where tasks are completed in a sequence. Tasks cannot be started until the previous one has been completed and signed off (hence, the waterfall movement).

This requires oversight by the design project manager of multiple timelines, workflows, and approvals to ensure the overall project is completed without unforeseen delays. Get hyper-specific by using annotation tools to comment directly on files, so designers don’t have to do detective work. Unless you’re Shania Twain, you must give quality feedback to a designer about the asset elements that don’t impress you much. An ambiguous comment can snowball into multiple iterations of a design that could have been avoided. Part of a designer’s role is to offer solutions to the problem a client is trying to solve.

The silverware included in the set belongs to the Buccellati Tahiti collection, while the porcelain items are part of the collection created in collaboration with Ginori 1975. The results are carpets crafted from red-tipped wooden skewers or pins that create patterns evoking the signature Issey Miyake pleats. Before you begin choosing the fonts and images for your website, it's crucial to make a solid plan and answer some key questions... The project plan helps your whole team understand the size and scope of your project before a single line of code is written. It ensures you and your client are on the same page through every step of the project.

My hope for you and your team is long-term success, so here are a few methodologies to consider that can help you understand your projects and teams better. Unlike traditional projects with a start and closing date, design projects are ongoing. It takes client and customer feedback to improve for the next experience. What’s more, design projects have different characteristics and challenges because design work is subjective. As a result, no two designers will produce the same project deliverable! Project design is an early phase of the project lifecycle where ideas, processes, resources, and deliverables are planned out.

otis house of 1000 corpses

It is a Roman Catholic cemetery, operated and maintained by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Bela Lugosi, most famous for his portrayal of the original 1931 Dracula, is buried here. The cemetery is currently under new ownership, but has had a dark history with previous owners, lawsuits and maintenance issues. In 2005, the cemetery’s license was suspended after officials found cremated remains of people who had passed as early as the 1930s scattered in trash bins and storage rooms. A year later, Marsha Howard, one of the cemetery owners, was found dead from natural causes in the cemetery and being reported missing. Fans of Leo G. Carroll can also pay their respects to the actor famous for his Hitchcock films here.

In time, director Rob Zombie bought the rights, and went on his own harrowing adventure to find another distributor. MGM eventually picked up the film and scheduled it for release in October 2002, but it was dropped after Zombie reportedly joked about Universal having "no morals" for not distributing the film, and then, "Well, MGM picked it up. I guess they have no morals." Otis is a fictional serial killer played by actor Bill Moseley and first appeared in the 2003 horror film House of 1000 Corpses, directed by Rob Zombie.

Toward the end, another protagonist escapes, but Spaulding picks her up, and while they’re driving, Otis appears in the back seat. House of 1000 Corpses won't go down in history as the most commercially successful horror movie of all time, nor the most critically acclaimed. This hardcore horror film's style plays like a terrifying music video, providing a roller coaster ride of gruesomely colorful scenes. To the squeamish, this movie can come off as shocking, repulsive, and downright unwatchable, due to its gory nature.

For a period of time, Moseley operated as a journalist, writing for such magazines as Omni,[5] National Lampoon and Psychology Today. Moseley was born in Stamford, Connecticut, and grew up in Barrington Hills, Illinois.[1] He is the son of Virginia Gillette (Kleitz), a journalist, and S. Mukes goes to about 20 cons a year now, often dressed as Rufus in a grimy plaid shirt and filthy jeans. Frequently, to gas himself up before an appearance, he’ll watch House of 1,000 Corpses. House of 1,000 Corpses hit theaters and landed in second place at the domestic box office in its first week, behind only Jack Nicholson’s Anger Management.

While these genres might not seem to blend at first glance, none of that mattered to Zombie, who is a huge fan of the legendary comic. "I was a big Marx Brothers fan when I was a little kid because their movies were always on TV," Zombie remarked in 2016. "A Night at the Opera, in particular, was on a lot. So I discovered the Marx Brothers movies around the same time I discovered any movie, really."

A nasty little stink bomb of a grindhouse slasher, the “plot” of House of 1,000 Corpses, if it can be called that, concerns four kids (including a pre-Office Rainn Wilson) who get lost on the backroads of America while searching for a local legend named Dr. Satan. Instead of finding him, they’re captured by a psychotic family called the Fireflys, who—spoilers—brutally kill off the youngsters one by one. People tend to be their own worst critics — although critics have plenty of scathing things to say about House of 1000 Corpses. While House of 1000 Corpses is brilliant to many, it was, as mentioned earlier, Zombie's directorial debut, so he's bound to look back and find issues with it.

He tied Otis to a chair and drove large nails through his hands, pinning him to the arms of the chair. He showed him photographs of his past victims, which he then stapled to Otis' chest. Wydell tortured all three of them at length then set the house on fire with the intent of burning them alive. Fortunately, Baby's brother Tiny showed up, killed Wydell and freed the three captives.

Otis' inherent depravity paved the way for his various grotesque hobbies. An unrepentent killer and fetishist, Otis enjoyed kidnapping and torturing victims, particularly cheerleaders, sometimes even skinning them. It was not uncommon for him to engage in necrophelia, and making skin costumes from the flesh of his victims.

More people are catching on (including Universal, which used House of 1,000 Corpses as the basis for part of its annual Halloween Horror Nights in 2010, 2011, and 2019). Cherry also runs a server on the social messaging platform Discord that has accumulated more than 150 members, who gather to discuss and post about Zombie’s movies and other horror flicks like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie mutated on the fly, the scenes mercury in Zombie’s hands as he showed up each morning brimming with new ideas—new pages for the cast to memorize, new sets for the crew to construct. His finished film was Texas Chainsaw Massacre but more gleeful and carnivalesque; it was The Rocky Horror Picture Show but more cramped and grotesque. It was the Marx Brothers and the Manson family chopped up and blitzed in a blender, then poured straight down your gullet as you’re held down by a late-night horror host from the 1950s and an MTV editor from the 1990s. Reports about a Devil's Rejects sequel emerged last year, with the news taking fans by surprise.

For Mama Firefly, Zombie turned to Karen Black of Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces fame. Sid Haig, a cult film legend known for his work in Spider Baby and Foxy Brown, was tapped to play the gonzo clown Captain Spaulding. Zombie had just gone solo when Universal decided to give him a blank check and the run of their backlot. Riding high off the success of his latest album, Hellbilly Deluxe, he was designing a scare maze for the studio’s Halloween Horror Nights when an executive turned to him and asked if he had any movie ideas. "When we were about ready to roll, I had a bit of an advance notice since it took me about a year and a half to grow that beard," the actor points out. He is presumably the father of Mama Firefly, previously known as Gloria Teasdale.

While Mother Firefly killed Lt. Wydell in her kitchen, Otis went outback where he found Donald Willis and Deputy Steve Naish. He shot Willis in the back, then killed Naish by shooting him in the head at point blank range. He then skinned Willis and made himself a Halloween cotume from his flesh. Wearing his Donald costume, Otis descended the staircase where the three others, Mary, Denise and Jerry were bound together in adult-sized rabbit costumes.

Baby killed Mary and brought her body back to the site where Otis and the others burned her on an altar made of branches. Jerry and Denise were locked inside a coffin and lowered into a tunnel that fed into an underground operating room. The operating room was administered by a psychotic surgeon known as Doctor Satan. Denise briefly managed to escape, but Otis re-captured her and brought her back to Doctor Satan's lair. He was horribly neglected and abused by his parents who didn't even give him a name.

The Firefly family house can be found on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood, where it was built for 1982 musical The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. Also on the backlot is the street where Don Willis (Harrison Young, familiar as the older Private Ryan) lives – apparently a neighbour of the Munsters. Rob Zombie delivers the kind of balls-out horror movie all 12-year-old boys want to make, before dreary good taste saps that furious energy. In 2019, Moseley appeared in Gothic Harvest with Lin Shaye and Sofia Mattsson, directed by Ashley Hamilton. Horror Fuel magazine reports that Moseley will star in the horror film Jasper alongside Michael Berryman, Kane Hodder and Bill Oberst in 2022. Manes was introduced to House of 1,000 Corpses while playing Tubi roulette a few years ago, and was instantly drawn to how the movie reveled in its own wickedness.

It stars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, Rainn Wilson, Chris Hardwick, Tom Towles, Erin Daniels, Jennifer Jostyn, Walton Goggins, and Dennis Fimple in his final role. The plot centers on a group of teenagers who are kidnapped and tortured by a psychotic family during Halloween after traveling across the country to write a book. After a decade of being mostly sober, Spector began going out again and ventured out on Feb. 2, 2003 for a night on the town.

On the run, Otis and Baby waded through the nearby swamp until they came to a highway. Baby laid upon the road pretending to be unconscious until a motorist stopped to check on her condition. As the woman leaned over Baby, Otis sprung up from behind and stabbed her to death. They stole the woman's car and drove until they reached the Kahiki Palms Motel.

“It’s a pre-9/11 film, released to a post-9/11 audience, that somehow really handily preempts all these themes we had suddenly become obsessed with in our movies,” Martin said. Surveillance, captivity, revenge, paranoia, culture clash—it was all in there. Although House of 1000 Corpses is a cult classic that made Zombie a household name in the horror genre, the director himself actually doesn't like the film very much.

Mary attempts to run away, but is tracked down and stabbed to death by Baby moments later. Visit a cemetery and commingle with the flyest residents of the afterlife, of course. You’ll also find that L.A.’s cemeteries offer some lush (or creepy) sights, and are backed with important history.

Dr. Satan might not be real

Denise later wakes up to find herself strapped to an operating table, surrounded by Dr. Satan and Earl, who survived the cave-in. The movie ends with Denise screaming in horror and the words "The End?" displayed before the end credits. Advertised on its completion as “the most beautiful storage building in the world,” this 1928 high rise once boasted a penthouse club called “The Thirteenth Heaven,” complete with angel-winged waiters. And where there are bootleggers, there are mobsters - this may be the source of the mysterious screams still heard from the elevator shaft. Durst's trial began in March 2020 and resumed in May 2021 after a 14-month adjournment due to COVID-19. In September 2021, the jury convicted Robert Durst for the first degree murder of his best friend Susan Berman. Durst had tried to escape justice by posing as a deaf-mute woman in Texas. According to her biographer, Berman had been killed because she knew too much about the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s wife Kathie, who has never been found. Durst was previously tried and acquitted of the murder and dismemberment of his elderly neighbor Morris Black.

As anyone familiar with his music videos can attest to, it's not a surprise that Zombie has etched his name in the annals of horror movie history. What is surprising is that House of 1000 Corpses took such a long and winding road to the theaters, that he initially thought he wouldn't be making sequels, and above all, that it was his first film. The movie simply feels too self-assured, too confident, and frankly, too good to be a first outing. Horror fans might be familiar with the fact that House of 1000 Corpses was inspired by 1970s horror films such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. However, they might be surprised to learn that the villains' names were influenced by comedian Groucho Marx.

Otis is the most depraved and violent member of the Firefly family, a sadist who makes the freaks for Captain Spaulding's museum. Escape prison.Kill Bill, Jerry, Mary, and Denise (all succeeded).Keep his family safe(Mostly failed except for Baby and Foxy) . By 1956, it also offered a crematorium, mortuary, and flower shop, turning it into a one-stop-shop for all death-related needs. Others, like Moseley, Karen Black, and Sid Haig, spent years running what McClelland characterized as an “underground publicity tour” simply by going to horror conventions and signing autographs. McClelland, who estimated he goes to three or four cons a year himself, would see them frequently, set up behind booths and interacting with delighted fans. Now terrified that House of 1,000 Corpses would be slapped with an NC-17 rating—a box-office kiss of death—the studio asked Zombie to tone the movie down. “It was kind of this crazy carnival going on at Universal in the backlot,” Gibbs said, adding that at night, the crew would climb up the hill “and party at the Psycho house.” Then they’d crash, wake up, and do it all over again. Safety was an afterthought, with one scene calling for an actor to dodge a real ax wielded by another performer whose vision was severely compromised by his costume.

A palace for Disney, Pixar and Marvel Cinematic Universe movies since its restoration in 1989, the El Capitan Theatre (6838 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles 90028) boasts an expansive sweet shop for the kids and an old-fashioned stage show before the picture. However, like Disneyland itself, the El Capitan has its ghostly dark side. In its previous life, the theater was the site of a suicide in the balcony seats and the death of a manager in its office. When Disney revived the El Capitan, legend has it they walled off the window above the entryway, where his ghost could still be seen from the street.

Filled with beautiful headstones dating back to 1884, Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery has the perfect creepy aura for a Halloween cemetery trip. The cemetery is poorly maintained, which heightens the spookiness of the cemetery. While the cemetery is primarily full of politicians, there are a few interesting figures to visit during your tour of Angelus-Rosedale. Maria Rasputin, daughter of Russian mystical healer and close friend of Russia’s Imperial family Grigori Rasputin, is buried here.

The only clue they received was a list of 600 burials along with the deed. The mystery, however, still remains, as only 13 tombstones and a little over 200 gravesites are found. If you look at the history of the Chinese Cemetery of Los Angeles, you'll find a reminder of how pervasive racism can be. The cemetery in East Los Angeles, right at the intersection of the 710 and 60 freeways, exists because Los Angeles citizens of Chinese ancestry were formally barred from buying burial plots in official L.A. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 placed a moratorium on immigration of Chinese laborers for ten years, but the racist repercussions lasted far longer. Even once the moratorium was lifted, anti-Chinese sentiment had pervaded the American consciousness.

The downward trim force comes about as a result of the need to balance the moment generated by the lift vector acting away from the center of gravity of the vehicle. In this way, the wing skins and web will not fail as a result of the shear loading induced when the aircraft operates at the edge of the design envelope. A collapse moment analysis examines the interaction between the wing skin in compression (which will tend to buckle) and the ability of the spar caps to absorb the extra load transferred if the skins do buckle.

Spar Cap (flange)

If the airplane rolls from straight and level flight, it will start to slip downwards as the lift is no longer acting straight up. Aerodynamically, this is equivalent to yawing the airplane away from the low wing. The sideslip thus produced will cause a rolling moment that tends to level the wings if the airplane has stable dihedral effect. Since the bending moment is a maximum at the root of the wing, the spar caps will need to be large enough (sufficient area) so as not to fail in bending.

More Commonly Misspelled Words

As we saw with interference effects, with proper design both high and low wings are obviously workable, but getting the low-wing airplane right is a bit harder. When the airplane yaws, the air pressure on the windward side of the fuselage increases and the pressure on the leeward side decreases. At this point in the design, wing area and wing loading have already been addressed in the sizing process. Although they might change a little as the design goes through multiple iterations, they are essentially set. We will not revisit them now but will, over the next few months, consider the other factors that go into the final wing configuration.

As rough landings were expected for the Corsair, the shorter undercarriage was also deemed necessary. And so, without further ado, here are some of the most common airplane wing configuration designs. Here we will limit our discussion to the wing-to-fuselage connection and angle configurations rather than wing shapes or lateral positioning. Before the structural layout of the wing is designed, a preliminary sizing of the wing planform should have been completed to size the wing for its required mission. Stiffeners or stringers form a part of the boundary onto which the wing skin is attached and support the skin against buckling under load. The stiffeners also carry axial loads arising from bending moments in the wing.

This allows the spar caps to act in pure tension and compression (bending) during flight. The spar web is responsible for carrying the vertical shear loads (lift) which arises from the aerodynamic loading of the wing. An example of the distributed lift load and resulting shear and bending moment diagrams arising from this loading is shown below. In both cases it is clear that the location of the highest shear and bending is the wing root. There are a lot of new drawings, and the drawings previously on this websitehave been processed and cleaned up. Some are still rather poor, but these are the best available at this time.

Near the leading edge, the air must flow upwards along the fuselage side and over the wing leading edge. Because of the high upwash angle in this local region, the transition between the bottom and sides of the fuselage just upstream of the wing must be shaped carefully or faired to prevent premature separation. At this point in the design process, we have gotten the airplane sized, balanced, and after six months of consideration gotten the landing gear right.

High wing aircraft have their wings mounted to the upper surface of their fuselage, or on top of it. For multi-engined aircraft, high wings enable the fuselage to be closer to the ground, which is ideal for large cargo planes and military transports. A mid wing configuration places the wings exactly at the midline of the airplane, at half of the height of the fuselage. Such configuration requires a carry-through spar structure that can reduce the useful fuselage volume near its center of gravity.

On an airplane with stable dihedral effect, the upwind wing will rise and the downwind wing will fall. Accordingly if one were to apply left rudder to yaw the airplane, the airplane would respond by banking to the left. Polyhedral wings are wings that combine elements of both anhedral and dihedral wings. Common examples include gull wings, inverted gull wings, and wings with dihedral or anhedral tips. This wing type provides excellent lateral stability for the aircraft and is one of the most common. A dihedral configuration increases lateral stability in a bank by causing the lower wing to fly at a higher angle of attack than the higher wing.

The ultimate load factor is therefore equal to 1.5 times the limit load specified in the FAR regulation. The 747 represented the single largest industrial achievement in modern history and its abandonment in the deserts make a statement about the obsolescence and ephemeral nature of our technology and our society. As a structure and engineering achievement, the aircraft encloses a lot of space using the least amount of materials in a very resourceful and efficient manner.
