Students in our Moving Ahead Program (MAP) benefit from volunteers working with them as they embark on their journey towards employment. Volunteers work with students doing Mock Interviews, tutoring individuals on basic computer literacy, providing classroom presentations on Life Skills and Wellness such as nutrition and exercise. We are also looking for volunteers to work in Studio Shine, our clothing boutique where students can choose business casual attire that they feel comfortable in for interviewing and wearing to their new jobs. Your time and talent can make a real difference in people’s lives. Over their 60 years on the street, the campus evolved, ever keeping to the eight-foot line where required.

Women experiencing homelessness are at an especially high risk for violence and nearly all of those who seek shelter here are survivors of trauma, abuse, or rape. For those who are new to St. Francis House, the Hospitality Desk in the Lobby is their first stop. There, guests meet with a Guest Engagement Liaison to receive a St. Francis House orientation and ID that helps them access many of our programs and services, including on-call case management or mental health counseling.

The sale of the property comes as St. Francis House faces rapidly increasing costs of operation, which led to the shelter temporarily stopping its daily meal service April 15 for homeless people in Gainesville. The exact location of the old dam is quick walk down from the turnoff along an eerie disused two lane highway, abandoned back in 2005 after severe storm damage. Plants grow through the cracks of the crumbling highway, a reminder that without human upkeep, nature is quick to reclaim what it considers its own. A modest pile of concrete, half buried by soil and vegetation on the canyon's floor, is all that remains of the once nearly 200-foot tall dam. A unknowing passerby could easily mistake the weathered and eroded concrete for natural geologic feature of San Francisquito Canyon. All of the public schools in the parish are located in unincorporated areas. At the 2000 United States census,[11] there were 1,712 people, 693 households, and 456 families residing in the town.
