Our Community

Students in our Moving Ahead Program (MAP) benefit from volunteers working with them as they embark on their journey towards employment. Volunteers work with students doing Mock Interviews, tutoring individuals on basic computer literacy, providing classroom presentations on Life Skills and Wellness such as nutrition and exercise. We are also looking for volunteers to work in Studio Shine, our clothing boutique where students can choose business casual attire that they feel comfortable in for interviewing and wearing to their new jobs. Your time and talent can make a real difference in people’s lives. Over their 60 years on the street, the campus evolved, ever keeping to the eight-foot line where required.

Later investigations, during the 1960s, revealed the dam was built on the site of an ancient landslide, undetectable to geologists with tools and equipment of the 1920s. Though the rock appeared stable, it was ultimately not strong enough to hold back 12.4 billion gallons of water. Though women make up only 20% our total guest population, the number of women seeking help at St. Francis House has more than doubled in recent years, making them one of the fastest-growing groups among the unhoused population. Women experiencing homelessness are at an especially high risk for violence and nearly all of those who seek shelter here are survivors of trauma, abuse, or rape. For those who are new to St. Francis House, the Hospitality Desk in the Lobby is their first stop. There, guests meet with a Guest Engagement Liaison to receive a St. Francis House orientation and ID that helps them access many of our programs and services, including on-call case management or mental health counseling.

‘Rivers in the sky’ have drenched California, yet even more extreme rains are possible

St. Francis House is a nonsectarian registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We have been serving people experiencing homelessness and poverty since 1984. St. Francis House rebuilds lives by providing refuge and pathways to stability for adults experiencing homelessness and poverty.

And the restrictions would block houses from being built right up to the property line — he wouldn’t just tout the appearance of country living through widely spaced houses, he’d lock it into the lot requirements. We regularly host events to advocate for and support people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. They are a great way to get involved, support and learn more about St. Francis House.

For more information on these different volunteer roles, please view the “Individual Volunteers” section above. And if you walk down Remsen street today, you can see the eight feet on this extra-wide sidewalk in front of the former St. Francis College buildings. The public part of the sidewalk is 14 feet wide and the eight-foot strip closest to the buildings is private property. It’s this strip that led to the lawsuit, possibly slowing redevelopment of the site. Your donation supports our neighbors experiencing homelessness in rebuilding their lives through our refuge, recovery, employment, and housing services. Guests who stay in a nighttime shelter must leave early each morning to allow the facility to clean and prepare for the next night.

We offer a setting steeped in the wisdom of St. Francis of Assisi to foster that growth. St. Francis House is established in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi to be a presence in Seattle to serve those in need and to inspire simplicity and charity in its volunteers and those they serve. The province covers the western United States and serves in areas of parish ministry, outreach to the poor, retreat work, hospital and prison chaplaincy, education, social advocacy, and foreign and Native American missions. For 50 years, St. Francis Center has been fulfilling our mission to feed, serve, and walk with the poor as a community of hope in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The sale of the property comes as St. Francis House faces rapidly increasing costs of operation, which led to the shelter temporarily stopping its daily meal service April 15 for homeless people in Gainesville. Back in 1947, our founders realized that people and groups want (and need) the time and space to push pause on their daily routine. That is why St Francis Retreat Center was created, so our community of participants can self-reflect and reconnect with themselves in a beautiful and serene atmosphere.

Pierrepont expanded on the period’s customary land use restrictions by also adding required types, materials, and sizes for buildings, and lot geometry minimums — concepts which are familiar from today’s zoning. See how the sidewalk is extra wide in front of the old St. Francis building? And all indications suggest that that future is approaching quickly. Since the study was written, Canada’s 2021 wildfire season was dwarfed by that of 2023, which saw more than 45 million acres burn. Although there was no single event as extreme as 2021’s heat dome, some regions of Canada saw many more heat events than on average, he said.

Five days later, on March 12, 1928, dam keeper Tony Harnischfeger discovered a newer, larger leak with muddy and murky water. Worried that the new leak's dirty qualities could indicate the dam's foundation was eroding, Harnischfeger phoned immediately for Mulholland. Tensions died down into winter, and the dam was refilled to within one foot of its spillway levels by February of 1928. Around this time though, dam inspectors begin to find more cracks and more leaks. Mulholland inspected the dam, ordered some patchwork fixes to be built, and signed off on the dam's structural sanctity. Water to continue to flow into the reservoir until it was within three-inches of the dams spillway.

The exact location of the old dam is quick walk down from the turnoff along an eerie disused two lane highway, abandoned back in 2005 after severe storm damage. Plants grow through the cracks of the crumbling highway, a reminder that without human upkeep, nature is quick to reclaim what it considers its own. A modest pile of concrete, half buried by soil and vegetation on the canyon's floor, is all that remains of the once nearly 200-foot tall dam. A unknowing passerby could easily mistake the weathered and eroded concrete for natural geologic feature of San Francisquito Canyon. All of the public schools in the parish are located in unincorporated areas. At the 2000 United States census,[11] there were 1,712 people, 693 households, and 456 families residing in the town.

About 5.8% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older. Inside our Carolyn Connors Women’s Center, we are dedicated to meeting the individual needs of guests who identify as women in a comfortable, cozy lounge setting. Each day women come here to support and inspire one another as they begin to take steps to rebuild their lives.

There were 693 households, out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.04. At the 2020 United States census, there were 1,557 people, 762 households, and 395 families residing in the town. The current town of St. Francisville was established on May 11, 1807, by John H. Johnson, and was originally known as the Villa of St. Francis.

Though the bond campaign almost didn't make it, Mulholland managed to persuade investors to buy $1.5 million of municipal bonds. Construction began in 1908, with the approval of another $24.5 million bond paid for by Californian and Eastern investors, and finished ahead of schedule and under budget in 1913. Of course, rapidly expanding Los Angeles was becoming thirstier and thirstier. Mulholland understood that if the city's incredible rate of growth was to be sustained, Los Angeles needed more water.
